Background

The School of Ocean and Earth Science at Tongji University covers multiple disciplines such as marine geology and physical oceanography, with a research and teaching team of 150 faculty members and 650 students. The school participates in national projects such as deep-sea exploration, and generates massive volumes of geological exploration and experimental data on a daily basis.

Challenge

Before adopting QNAP, laboratory data management was chaotic, with TB-level experimental data scattered across personal computers and hard disk drives. File sharing and version management during cross-team collaboration were extremely cumbersome, and data retrieval was very time-consuming. As research data grew exponentially, the risk of data loss intensified, severely hampering the laboratory's overall research efficiency.

Solution

To fully meet the high-reliability storage demands of massive datasets, the school deployed a QNAP 16-bay enterprise-class NAS TS-1673AU-RP in 2026, and configured 5 units of 16TB hard disk drives for data archiving and analysis. This solution fully utilizes the SMB multi-channel protocol, aggregating dual 2.5GbE network ports for high-speed transmission, and makes extensive use of HBS 3 to achieve stable and efficient resumable data transfer. At the same time, the underlying ZFS file system snapshot function is fully enabled to address ransomware and accidental deletion risks.

Achievements

The QNAP solution has achieved centralized, secure storage and fine-grained permission sharing for multi-disciplinary research data. The read/write speed of TB-level geological exploration data has increased by nearly 70% (single-file speed exceeds 500MB/s), cross-team collaboration version conflicts have been reduced by 90%, and data organization time has been drastically shortened from 3 days to half a day. With the unified management platform, IT operation and maintenance workload has been reduced by 60%, the automated backup rate has reached 100%, and the recovery time for accidentally deleted data has been compressed from several hours to within 5 minutes, establishing a highly cost-effective security safeguard for research achievements.
